Just a snippet

Well, I have been working hard on many many projects. Too many it's starting to get out of control, but I'm sure that never happens with anyone else...But all joking aside I am getting closer to showing you all what I have been up to. It's so hard to keep it all a secret sometimes! I do have one thing I can show you. I recently discovered wide batik backings and I have to say my experience with them so far is divine. This is one I have been using in a project and I can't get over how beautiful it is. Very vibrant and exciting!

One night this week I was working on the computer and Duncan usually feels the need to be in my lap whether I want him there or not. The alternative to that plan is he might lay down on a chair next to me. I was working away and I heard him fuss a bit, jump and then do his little relaxing growl. I looked over to see this:
I still don't know how he managed to jump on the chair as it was tucked in to the table without hitting something or getting stuck! Crazy dog - but I love him to pieces.

Other than that, yesterday I participated in my first ever Happy Hallo-Luau Party. My neighbors love Halloween but will be gone during the holiday and this was the only other weekend to hold their annual party. They considered it to be a celebration of the end of Summer (luau) and the beginning of Fall (Halloween) - hence Happy Hallo-Luau! It really was nice and interesting and I stayed out waaaaayyyyyy too late last night and am paying for it now, but it was fun! After getting some other things done this morning and doing some impromptu yard work that I feel so much better now that it's done, I'm off to sew some more. That is if I can keep my eyes open! Have way too many other things that need to get done and not enough hours in the day to do them. (Anyone else feel like this?) Well, until next time!

It's that time again!

It's the perfect weather for the first batch of chili at the Silbaugh household. It's been a fun packed day designing my friend's menus for her cupcake business, Sweet C's Cups & Cakes (if you are in North East Ohio, she will be at the Pumpkin Festival in Huntsburg in a couple weeks, go and check her out!), my Hubbin and I painted a second coat of red in our bedroom (sorry but the Valspar paint and primer does NOT do what they say it should!), and chili is in the crockpot cooking away!

When we bought our house everything including the walls and the floors is a wonderful color that has been dubbed "Builder Beige". I love color and after a year or so we have finally spent some of our time deciding which colors we would like in our rooms and actually putting those colors on the wall. This is Heirloom Red and there's still a few spots that need touched up, but we'll get to that another day. I was worried with our dark bedroom furniture it would be too dark, but honestly it's perfect. And it will match a quilt that I'm working on so all the better!

And for what you've all been waiting for - my chili recipe. It's really easy, about 20 minutes of prep, and just let it cook all day and dinner will be ready when you are.

Ingredients:
* 2-3 pounds of ground meat (beef is good but use what you have, Same with the amoutn of meat, use what you have. Don't worry about making a special trip to the store if you don't have to!)
* 2 green peppers (diced into big pieces)
* 2 onions (diced into big pieces)
* 2 tablespoons minced garlic
* 2 cans of beans (it's great to mix and match these too)
* 2 cans of diced tomatoes (try some of the specially seasoned ones!)
* 2 small cans of diced green chiles
* 1 small can of tomato paste
* 1 cup of chicken broth
* 2 tablespoons of worcestershire sauce
* 2 tablespoons italian seasonings
* 2 teaspoons cayenne pepper
* salt and pepper as needed
Step One: Brown the meat in a skillet, season as desired. Remove the meat from the drippings and put into the Crock Pot.
Step Two: You can either discard the drippings and use olive oil, or use the drippings to slightly cook the diced green pepper and onion. Place these in the Crock Pot with the meat.
Step Three: Make sure you are using a large Crock Pot because of this step - add the rest of the ingredients to the Crock Pot and stir well until all ingredients are mixed.
Step Four: Set the temperature of the Crock Pot to Low (cook for 8-10 hours) or High (cook for 4-6 hours). Place the lid on the Crock Pot and DO NOT TOUCH until finished! The lid will be full of steam which will seal in all of the goodness. As much as you (or your Husband...) want to look and stir - RESIST! This does not do you good and actually causes the Crock Pot to lose heat and take longer to cook. (I'm still working on the resist to stir thing with Hubbin - tisk tisk tisk)
Step Five: Serve with your favorite companion such as roasted potatoes, spaghetti, baked potatoes, cornbread, or just by itself. Spoon and bowl might be necessary!
*If you find the chili too runny for your taste, a little thickening flour should do the trick or cook the last half hour without the lid on the Crock Pot.
Well, there it is. This is now one of my favorite meals (coming from the girl who didn't like chili until I was married!) and I look forward to making it often this time of year. This recipe does make a bunch so it will feed a crowd or freezes nicely. It's way too much just for Hubbin and I, so this also happens alot.

I hope you enjoy it, I know I am enjoying a bowl of this yummy goodness right now. Until next time!

Happy Giddy Bliss

Alright, this is going to be short and sweet. For starters Bliss has arrived at Cottonpickers and I love it all so, I want to bring more home with me! So my lovely friend Gayle was equally ecstatic that it finally came in that she coined the new phrase "Happy Giddy Bliss". Needless to say she was feeling Happy Giddy Bliss and wasn't leaving until she had some Happy Giddy Bliss in her hot little hands. She makes me giggle and I just love her to pieces.

Duncan with the crazy scraggly hair was just getting out of control and before the cool weather really came to Madison, we got him his annual Fall buzz cut and doesn't he look just so adorable?!

The longer his hair gets, the darker it is. His undercoat is really a tan and blackish grey brindle that I think looks handsome on him and is only noticeable for a short time after his buzz cut.

And I couldn't help but attempt to get a picture of Paco in his little nest on the couch. He is such a wiggle worm though, this was the best picture I could get. And with his big ol' buggy eyes I can't hardly get a picture without the horrible red eye thing. Love this little guy too. He's turning white in spots and my Hubbin and I now jokingly call him our little silver haired fox.

I'm still working on the monster quilt, it's coming along nicely, but in the mean time he is a snippet into what I was working on last week. I love batiks and this one has been a ton of fun to work with. Also, it's the first time I had used a wide batik backing on a quilt and it's so perfect to go with the top, it's almost like they were meant to go together.

They're calling for lots of wind and storms tomorrow, I'm praying the power does not go out, I've got way too much to get done. Wish me luck and I'll keep you updated!

I shouldn't be on here...

I really should be quilting, I'm so close to finishing the rows for my big Big BIG quilt. And then I need to clip and press all of them, put them together, clip and press again. And then add borders - if I make it that far. This quilt will finish at 98" square and it's the first quilt I am trying the Jo Morton clipping trick (if you haven't tried it yet - alot more time spent in the prep work, but the results and accuracy are well worth the effort!) I'm really enjoying it, but it's taking a bit longer than expected.

I've still been reading the Benni Harper series by Earlene Fowler. I love them and on my nights when I've worked all day and been running myself ragged, these books are my saving grace and they keep me sane at the end of the day. However, even though I love them so, some nights when I have to choose between quilting or reading I usually opt for reading. I quilt so much better during the day and need a relaxing distraction to finish off my day.

So that's my current issue - I should be quilting, but tomorrow morning I can get so much more done in a big block of time - and I wanted to chat with all of you so that's why I'm on here - and once I get done it'll be too dark and late to do anything else so I'll probably start my new book! See how that goes :]

So besides working on this project, actual work and the occassional date night with my Hubbin, that's about all I've been up to. What have you been up to? I'd love to find out! Until next time!

One of those days...

Sorry, there was a post here, it is now somewhere in lala-land. We will chat more later!

The winner is...

I trusted the good ol' random number generator to make the decision for me because all of you left wonderful comments and I enjoyed reading them all. It was nice to see that many of you had learned quilting from a family member or friend and that is something that you will never forget (just remember to pass it on as well!). Others are inspired by non quilters like activists or their husbands.

I'm just so glad that we have this little connection that (excuse the pun, sorry it's really early in the morning here) threads it's way through our lives. Nothing is more important than being happy and enjoying yourself no matter what you do, but if you touch someone's life it makes it all the better.

So I know you're wondering and the winner is........

Wow what a great give-a-way!! I love tins and especially Clermont Farms:) My grandmother inspired me. She passed away in 1998 and I still miss her as she passed on her love of sewing and canning to me. Another inspiration is NieNie at http://nieniedialogues.blogspot.com/

Laura, you have an e-mail in your inbox and I would like to personally thank all of you who participated. I hope you had fun and I will have more to show you soon. Enjoy a nice weekend and I'm going to be experimenting in the kitchen this weekend so stay tuned to see what happens there. I got some peaches at the grocery store last night, they looked yummy, but I have no clue what to make with them. If you have any suggestions, please share.

I'm off to enjoy breakfast and maybe get some quilting in before I have to go to work, thanks again. I will definitely be doing another give away soon. Chat again soon!

Pictures as promised...

Here are some of the other pictures I took that didn't make the cut. I had a blast taking some of them at my friend Donna's house in her garden with her awesome red rocking chair. The lighting was perfect, I don't get it, but the quilt was overexposed.

So we tried again so this is my wonderful sleigh bed that I love and my chest of drawers in the next pictures.

Word to the wise next time you think about buying a sleigh bed or other bed with a large head/footboard - find somebody you know with a similar style bed and try to put sheets on it before you buy it. It's a bit more challenging than you might think.

Sometimes it's hard to pick just one or a couple pictures to show off the quilt in a way that will showcase it's greatest features. A picture will not do a quilt justice about 98% of the time, but it's fun to try different layouts and props and see what will emerge. (Like a crazy dog who decides to lay on the quilt as you're attempting to take pictures of it)

Once again, don't forget to enter the drawing in the post Give Away (click here to go straight to the Give Away), you have until Friday night! Keep entering and don't be shy of who inspires you. I have read all the entries this far and am becoming inspired myself by a few names I was not familiar with. Isn't it just wonderful we all love similar things but can have our own style or flavor that makes us unique?

I'm off to go quilt myself and get something accomplished tonight, until next time!
