Today I have the pleasure of sharing with you a new book Martingale has just released called The Big Book of Civil War Quilts.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwegUZpe9JEHqRzIVtdQ5hy8Ma95LNgoWYIot72szdh-W9KHq-V6TAiBSYO6s2aW54vC7UIYxaR7AFczVwl6e4Mv97V_7Afx56erb-ooMFR7hBTTbhRN-wboKdyWgr-pbf9fGLIQ8VVdc/s1600/Big-Book-of-Civil-War-Quilts-cover.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1299" data-original-width="1000" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwegUZpe9JEHqRzIVtdQ5hy8Ma95LNgoWYIot72szdh-W9KHq-V6TAiBSYO6s2aW54vC7UIYxaR7AFczVwl6e4Mv97V_7Afx56erb-ooMFR7hBTTbhRN-wboKdyWgr-pbf9fGLIQ8VVdc/s400/Big-Book-of-Civil-War-Quilts-cover.jpg" width="306" /></a></div>
It's really a big book! 58 patterns! You heard me right, 58! You could make a quilt a week and still be making them this time next year and beyond!<br />
<br />
The quilts in this wonderful book come from a variety of your favorite designers, in sizes large and small... Basically if you love Civil War or traditional quilts, there's something in here for you!<br />
<br />
I was blessed enough to have two of my very own quilts in this book.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7flPUSeOTjxF3z8-tBOmiesMJRKuPYa1T4opGDT2Up0swb03Ug5K1v0jFK8n1NyddB-I63vq1-p3WiiBmDI0eM-NmGX8mHvaSl6GD2pfdTEPYmK9GrJMeKBxKMTpGr3bKkof1oSKrIas/s1600/Rebecca-Silbaugh--Beloved.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1002" data-original-width="1000" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7flPUSeOTjxF3z8-tBOmiesMJRKuPYa1T4opGDT2Up0swb03Ug5K1v0jFK8n1NyddB-I63vq1-p3WiiBmDI0eM-NmGX8mHvaSl6GD2pfdTEPYmK9GrJMeKBxKMTpGr3bKkof1oSKrIas/s320/Rebecca-Silbaugh--Beloved.jpg" width="318" /></a></div>
This is Beloved and it's one of my personal favorite quilts ever. I made it almost entirely out of my stash (everything but the borders, binding, and backing) and you can really have fun with color combinations. I paired up some crazy fabrics together and the results are better than I anticipated.<br />
<br />
I actually made this quilt for my Hubby (hence the name) and it has such a comfy cozy feel to it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizep3xUGkHEpognVIcYcoFfSCoW-uxvbMS0PkQUbOtVyqz-9m482CJCYlvvl7XhoXPMR1A1J6S8a2L7wMtEliMFmAGCXlXQ8qQxgVoGxpd6UgVeFn6D9231d_nS0RSANRKVtj2JeVpdiI/s1600/Rebecca-Silbaugh--Woven-Stars.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1240" data-original-width="1000" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizep3xUGkHEpognVIcYcoFfSCoW-uxvbMS0PkQUbOtVyqz-9m482CJCYlvvl7XhoXPMR1A1J6S8a2L7wMtEliMFmAGCXlXQ8qQxgVoGxpd6UgVeFn6D9231d_nS0RSANRKVtj2JeVpdiI/s400/Rebecca-Silbaugh--Woven-Stars.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
This second quilt is a mini called Woven Stars that I hand quilted. I actually began as a hand quilter and miss it so, but the long arming has slowly (but surely) taken over my life! This little gem was just enough to play with my favorite rich fabrics and get a little bit of hand quilting in without committing to a large project.<br />
<br />
Again, you can find both of these quilts and many many more in The Big Book of Civil War Quilts. I think the timing is just perfect because the weather is starting to change here, the air is a little crisper and cooler, it's time to dust off the crockpot, and pull out my quilts for Fall.<br />
<br />
If you'd like to see more quilts featured in this book as well as have <a href="http://blog.shopmartingale.com/quilting-sewing/civil-war-quilt-ideas-58-counting/" target="_blank">a chance to win your own copy of the book, head on over to Martingale's blog to enter! Just click here. </a><br />
<br />
So, I think I need a new quilt for my bed and I have a ginormous stash of reproduction fabrics just sitting there... Now to decide on a pattern... I'm still here, I just haven't had much time to post on the blog since Maura is now tall and mobile and yeah... The toddler years are upon us. I thought I could quilt for little bits here and there and keep Maura entertained and out of trouble with all of the toys that light up and make noise in my studio. I *thought* (like a naive first-time mom) that since I could hear her I didn't need to keep an eye on her like a hawk. I WAS WRONG.<br />
<br />
One day I was quilting along trying to finish a section after she woke up from her nap and I turn around to see this:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjImPxmVLa54yLbqNGOGBd9-XZZhSyOSS-GLxCMhN2aYr03ug3yMcmgsoNrFaFgqJh15juuWDjwiuzJuBzg5aBIFSMA6drcDjsW8nokoeI5Ra6_5klUQ6NhYVaxagYXUtNXnYV6hE4KWrM/s1600/Maura.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjImPxmVLa54yLbqNGOGBd9-XZZhSyOSS-GLxCMhN2aYr03ug3yMcmgsoNrFaFgqJh15juuWDjwiuzJuBzg5aBIFSMA6drcDjsW8nokoeI5Ra6_5klUQ6NhYVaxagYXUtNXnYV6hE4KWrM/s400/Maura.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<img src="webkit-fake-url://a5f34542-d685-4693-9b5f-00c744da86aa/imagejpeg" /><br />
And then I had a mini heart attack. And it's only gotten worse since. Maura is now 13 months old and is half my height. No joke. So not only is she young and inquisitive, she can get into so much more because shes so tall. She didn't get her height from me!<br />
<br />
But alas, I'm still quilting away like a mad woman (during naps and bedtime) and you can see everything I'm working on (or everything I'm allowed to show) on my<a href="https://www.facebook.com/rubybluequilts/" target="_blank"> Facebook page (Ruby Blue Quilting Studio</a>) and<a href="https://www.instagram.com/rubybluequilts/" target="_blank"> Instagram (@rubybluequilts)</a>. It's so much easier for me to post quick little tidbits over there than blog posts here. So for the meantime that will be where you can see the most updates.<br />
<br />
I'm still adjusting my quilting schedule <a href="http://rubybluequilts.blogspot.com/p/schedule.html" target="_blank">(on a separate page you can get to here)</a> and you can check back often to see progress. It's not up-to-the-minute updates, but you get the idea.<br />
<br />
And finally, the giveaway. Martingale wanted to celebrate the release of <i>The Big Book of Strip Quilts </i>and you can<a href="http://blog.shopmartingale.com/quilting-sewing/60-strip-quilts-for-jelly-rolls-stash-strips-and-scrap-strips" target="_blank"> hop over to their blog here</a> to enter to win an ebook.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
There are 60 (yes that's six-zero) quilts in this book that all use 2.5" strips. So it's time to bust out those jelly rolls you've been hoarding, maybe use up those leftover strips you have in your stash, or just cut your own out of those lovely piles of fabrics staring at you all day long. There are so many amazing quilts in this ginormous book from a variety of your favorite authors, there's something in here for everyone. I am so lucky to have three quilts in this book, one is Roll of Stamps pictured above.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgw8C-Pc2shAVTIWlLIqWkJhq7zKIIN7PHm038M7wKGFa4S23V1RngRqAJ691iaiiMQDGdzSkXhljYdYfXmz_ONoJPGt3URiGGZdGsP3vdgI3oF3SG5yaT3tK3QNCmAzoVtILjIYrvBmrw/s1600/Big+Book+of+Strip+Quilts.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgw8C-Pc2shAVTIWlLIqWkJhq7zKIIN7PHm038M7wKGFa4S23V1RngRqAJ691iaiiMQDGdzSkXhljYdYfXmz_ONoJPGt3URiGGZdGsP3vdgI3oF3SG5yaT3tK3QNCmAzoVtILjIYrvBmrw/s400/Big+Book+of+Strip+Quilts.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
And like it was meant to be, my very own copy arrived at my doorstep yesterday. Like magic! So <a href="http://blog.shopmartingale.com/quilting-sewing/60-strip-quilts-for-jelly-rolls-stash-strips-and-scrap-strips" target="_blank">head on over to Martingale's blog</a> and enter for a chance to win! You have through the 25th to enter!<br />
<br />
So that's what's going on here. Don't be a stranger on the other social media platforms, and if you need anything you can always shoot me an email too.<br />
<br />
Yes I'm here. Yes I'm still quilting. And yes I spend my days chasing a crazy toddler. Karen is a wiz at working with floral fabrics!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgh-wGgc7laGL6zmh9mHAIDPzF-JwUEtal5DgJzc1sfeih3FZZ5wIx_WO3_s0l-lJiQueko3hHCa9lQmDxxqr4PsvCQ3ne4t8QIeaD5-zHMnEvmtRMi6Es6koUXV-ZWVGDhPi1i41Gg3QQ/s1600/01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgh-wGgc7laGL6zmh9mHAIDPzF-JwUEtal5DgJzc1sfeih3FZZ5wIx_WO3_s0l-lJiQueko3hHCa9lQmDxxqr4PsvCQ3ne4t8QIeaD5-zHMnEvmtRMi6Es6koUXV-ZWVGDhPi1i41Gg3QQ/s400/01.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
A nice big blocky quilt showcased the prints she used wonderfully. I think Karen is as much of a fan of swirls as I am so we put them on this quilt.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipRJ3cgJKlV-r8qm779XlG6JLiTYY_MC0tZg9763dPWii3vdV_O2wSI-CKoqxBn07avLsAgozbLiMrMZhyQah8uRH0lJDxw542yCOLdmqRlPWOWakkAbxDFFz1cJIW7ySyKCbE5Sj1bEk/s1600/02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipRJ3cgJKlV-r8qm779XlG6JLiTYY_MC0tZg9763dPWii3vdV_O2wSI-CKoqxBn07avLsAgozbLiMrMZhyQah8uRH0lJDxw542yCOLdmqRlPWOWakkAbxDFFz1cJIW7ySyKCbE5Sj1bEk/s400/02.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
I could probably come up with an excuse to put swirls on any quilt if given the chance!<br />
<br />

Karen brought me this quilt along with another one she had quilted in the past with a pantograph. Well, I don't do pantographs but she really liked the way the feathers looked and wondered if I could do something similar and this is what I came up with.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhi4banahJHD1x1sgBj9oykT8B1swqw1nX3uuEnxniIkDgoE0cOUwQ3wrw46CIuuqQjA21Yogappu9xpnE8zOHs1i9veTRmxTjSCmCJ2iPL0fhkad3ILaz6mldI4RSK5GBn15szfqaDPzQ/s1600/02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhi4banahJHD1x1sgBj9oykT8B1swqw1nX3uuEnxniIkDgoE0cOUwQ3wrw46CIuuqQjA21Yogappu9xpnE8zOHs1i9veTRmxTjSCmCJ2iPL0fhkad3ILaz6mldI4RSK5GBn15szfqaDPzQ/s400/02.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
These feathers are loose and fun but they were a challenge for me at the start. When I normally quilt feathers I start at the base and work from the center of the spine out. With these feathers you still work from the base up but from the outside in. It was backwards to the normal way I quilt and took a little getting used to, but I did it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7mqEv04y4wdip5eydRZdkK7kixSIxlfFl223U1qgPIWAi41Ah4R6KzvPJMZdaQxEHPQvUq35vyfoblDcKdMNbPLBXyo2DSr0IdKJ3EBO9-1Nf2ZM-66RZOuZ0DtEmudqpYB3qB9kiD2c/s1600/03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7mqEv04y4wdip5eydRZdkK7kixSIxlfFl223U1qgPIWAi41Ah4R6KzvPJMZdaQxEHPQvUq35vyfoblDcKdMNbPLBXyo2DSr0IdKJ3EBO9-1Nf2ZM-66RZOuZ0DtEmudqpYB3qB9kiD2c/s400/03.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Since the feathers are nice and loose they were a perfect match for these wonky stacked strips in the quilt.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvd6gWYkIvdscvfhSx4HRbMm-2HtwuPuToUhmNW5gQnoA6urI4aUyiwkmWl0M34aNDUAaKaiWR8oNpGK13BcjHXQFNIq35v-uiPAU8lf4TuiSVfPfDVHXgVaA_se13LTfYGb6TK18s0sE/s1600/04.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvd6gWYkIvdscvfhSx4HRbMm-2HtwuPuToUhmNW5gQnoA6urI4aUyiwkmWl0M34aNDUAaKaiWR8oNpGK13BcjHXQFNIq35v-uiPAU8lf4TuiSVfPfDVHXgVaA_se13LTfYGb6TK18s0sE/s400/04.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And here's how the feathers look on the back of the quilt. I think I need to do these more often! They're a lot of fun and pull me ever so gently out of my comfort zone which is a good thing!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Thank you, Karen! I love your quilts and the way you put colors together! </div>

<br />
Life has been insane. We have all been sharing a version of the same cold again and again for the last month or so which has drained my energy more than I care to admit.<br />
<br />
I will try to blog more but I can't make any promises. Miss Maura is now walking and growing like crazy and she is my #1 priority. You can find me for quicker updates over on Facebook (Ruby Blue Quilting Studio) or Instagram (@rubybluequilts). That is my easiest way to post since it's a little more short and simple.<br />
<br />
However since my time and attention is limited these days I am trying to make it easier for you to help me help you - in lesser words I have posted my quilting schedule on a separate page. If you're looking at this blog from a desktop, the pages are listed at the top just underneath my logo. If you're on a mobile device, a drop down menu is available for you to find the pages. My schedule is on the page titled "My (Quilting) Schedule". It's not perfect, nor exact, but it's a start.<br />
<br />
I urge you to please reserve yourself a spot if you are looking for custom quilting as it takes much longer to plan and execute. I can do a much better job if we can work together and plan ahead rather than feeling rushed.Ruby Blue Quilting Studiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00925979611375372834noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7260884226464668167.post-92136579167650668212016-12-30T06:30:00.000-05:002016-12-30T06:30:53.775-05:00Machine Quilting: Scrappy Wedding StarsI absolutely adore the colors in this quilt. It's just so rich and cozy feeling which will be perfect for the newlyweds receiving this quilt!<br />

This quilt is so scrappy that it's almost too much to take in at first. I really had to study this quilt to see what was going on. I love the arrangement of the stars and the different scaling as they're placed across the quilt. Since that was a constant I focused on the stars and chose to quilt them different than the rest of the quilt.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3nfXuufwGhcBrAJEYcjyNlESGEl6oTjBdWDlYC9U_wH1F4_2AfFOPePXUQiHuNSy-89nbNG9n1a6roWMb09ULAw0CkbU18tzJSXThrjRMa3pVhWXujKPscmj9ZVgSS0FtumGchP2uNkY/s1600/02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3nfXuufwGhcBrAJEYcjyNlESGEl6oTjBdWDlYC9U_wH1F4_2AfFOPePXUQiHuNSy-89nbNG9n1a6roWMb09ULAw0CkbU18tzJSXThrjRMa3pVhWXujKPscmj9ZVgSS0FtumGchP2uNkY/s400/02.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
The stars alternated feathers and back & forth lines in the center, but I continued the back & forth lines in the outer points too.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg79YjKkvFF3tMg2SCBywjhTrvJ7YKTcP0xjJodRQN-Lb4-pobUAiKq7P0xVJx9chyPfUsx839OZS5EkvFo_409pGvsY8o5qwc9Gk6HHnr41wKQFFQvaWx9ifmPHR31RFZSL6k_PtoJ_Jo/s1600/03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg79YjKkvFF3tMg2SCBywjhTrvJ7YKTcP0xjJodRQN-Lb4-pobUAiKq7P0xVJx9chyPfUsx839OZS5EkvFo_409pGvsY8o5qwc9Gk6HHnr41wKQFFQvaWx9ifmPHR31RFZSL6k_PtoJ_Jo/s400/03.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
The rest of the quilt was filled with curls, they're one of my new favorite fillers! Knowing this quilt was made as a wedding gift, I try really hard not to make the quilting too girly or too manly. I try to find that happy medium that both people can enjoy.<br />
<br />
Thanks, Barb! It was fun to discover your stash while working along this quilt. (That's so fun for me with scrappy quilts, discovering fabrics that I have, fabrics I've never seen before, fabrics I didn't know I needed but now I want...)Ruby Blue Quilting Studiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00925979611375372834noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7260884226464668167.post-62632760943766831512016-12-29T09:46:00.001-05:002016-12-29T09:46:46.148-05:00Machine Quilting: Beatrix PotterPat made this adorable baby quilt and we had a slight issue on our hands...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYdDKfLczIR1PpttlXcdel3-e4n8AV3O4qp8s-WPlwv9qVOgYk-t_l3aP3-vURyw_UHb5J-Z6WQOei22g1Cm1fAfpLWIdTyJ4aqiH8x2VbBcK2g-cmkdq9qmbhauKkWWTrt2FQisAbHdw/s1600/01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYdDKfLczIR1PpttlXcdel3-e4n8AV3O4qp8s-WPlwv9qVOgYk-t_l3aP3-vURyw_UHb5J-Z6WQOei22g1Cm1fAfpLWIdTyJ4aqiH8x2VbBcK2g-cmkdq9qmbhauKkWWTrt2FQisAbHdw/s400/01.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
You see that pink-ish batik surrounding each of the blocks? Well, it was the backing fabric too and it's one of those weird colors. It's orange-y next to pink and too pink next to orange. I laid out the quilt with a light pink thread, an apricot color and a light orange over a couple days through changes in the light and then made my decision of which thread would work the best. It actually was the light pink that won out (It's a Girl - So Fine).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6hFQRIsT5Tyv7xtt5mZlxx_YLB8aof78vOQLj-ajFr7dG8ZnsIEVbvWD2ZEkge1uSaDHs1elVnkHvjrdxl_8SwEO79IiYdrIGr2SWe0tEBXKB3xX4SBnB9HX-Y-Lh0rmc9By_lCqVSa4/s1600/02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6hFQRIsT5Tyv7xtt5mZlxx_YLB8aof78vOQLj-ajFr7dG8ZnsIEVbvWD2ZEkge1uSaDHs1elVnkHvjrdxl_8SwEO79IiYdrIGr2SWe0tEBXKB3xX4SBnB9HX-Y-Lh0rmc9By_lCqVSa4/s400/02.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Not to take away from any of the blocks and the fussy cut panels, we kept the quilting simple with an overall swirl.<br />
<br />
I wish you could have seen this quilt in person, the colors were beyond perfect! I grew up collecting Beatrix Potter and I never would have picked these colors, I always would have picked more dusty hues, but this quilt was refreshing!<br />
<br />
Thank you, Pat! Your quilt was so much fun to work on (as always!).Ruby Blue Quilting Studiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00925979611375372834noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7260884226464668167.post-31032195369005989562016-12-27T09:30:00.000-05:002016-12-27T09:30:48.884-05:00Happy Holidays!!!Phew! We made it through our first Christmas with little Maura and she did so well! Much better than I anticipated considering the hustle and bustle and excitement the last few days.<br />

Sorry it's blurry, it's off my phone, but she had the most adorable Christmas jammies that she didn't actually wear on Christmas because we had a heat wave and it was just too hot for fleece! That's definitely not the norm here in Ohio, yesterday we hit a record high of 68* and today it's supposed to snow later. It's weird.<br />
<br />
Anywho, as far as quilting goes I am taking this week to do some selfish sewing of this guy:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDnmqMyek7qMvod2V1Y1Tzg8T_cn3nhlEDdZPbwJzApqhcdq3Aw9VI98KjBJSACxCzUVWXlg7ly126_PGF1ZNC_pnaa_SnUv1e7u9MGiSi-JoPLccwQhP54rPXTq5hmO4SGtg36fa6b-s/s640/blogger-image-375224313.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="296" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDnmqMyek7qMvod2V1Y1Tzg8T_cn3nhlEDdZPbwJzApqhcdq3Aw9VI98KjBJSACxCzUVWXlg7ly126_PGF1ZNC_pnaa_SnUv1e7u9MGiSi-JoPLccwQhP54rPXTq5hmO4SGtg36fa6b-s/s400/blogger-image-375224313.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I finished this top almost two years ago and it's just begging to be quilted. I had a plan, it was all drawn out - but somehow in the last couple weeks of Christmas chaos it disappeared and I'm starting over. Hopefully I can figure out the plan this morning and get to quilting tonight after everyone else is asleep... Cross your fingers. I have coffee, a pencil, a printout (or three) and a napping baby at the moment, I think I can, I think I can! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm hoping to get this one quilted up and enter it into the Lake Farmpark show this year, which means I have to quilt fast! The quilts need to be entered in just a few weeks. I think I can! I think I can!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After this little pause it will be back to quilting and cooking and playing with the baby (whose not such a baby anymore I guess). I'm taking in quilts and planning ahead for this year, if I play my cards just right I may even be able to post my schedule here soon. Granted the computer and I don't get as much one-on-one time as we used to, but that's okay with me! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'll be posting more soon. From my little family to yours - I hope you had an amazing Christmas and I hope 2017 has all the best in store for you! I have a feeling it's going to be wonderful! -Rebecca</div>

This quilt is large and absolutely covered in amazing applique! Seriously, the only "real piecing" in the entire quilt are the HSTs in the sashing. That's it. Everything else you see is applique. You also have an opportunity to win this quilt - keep on reading and prepare yourself for photo overload! I love this quilt and took a TON of pictures. I couldn't help myself!<br />

The challenge with a quilt like this is to make the quilting be functional and emphasize the details without competing for attention. This border was one of those moments where less-is-more. Simple straight lines to fill the background accent the curvy swirly applique and make it pop.<br />

We only chose a few background designs and I think two different fillers for the vases. Again, less is more when there's so much to look at with this quilt to begin with.<br />

I love some applique pieces that show up to me looking like blobs. These flowers for instance, I knew they were supposed to be flowers, but without being familiar with the pattern I wasn't sure what type of flower.<br />
<br />
Remember when you take a quilt to a quilter - you've been staring at that pattern for a long while, they may have never heard of it. Don't assume your quilter is familiar with every pattern you're working on.<br />
<br />
I wasn't sure if they were something specific that I needed to be aware of or if they were just a blob that needed to look like a flower. They were just non-typical blobs in this case and I'll show you below what I did in the details.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

When in doubt with flowers, most radiate out from a central point so I started there and used wavy lines to fill the flower until I got to the edge. Each one is a little different!<br />

The center block was this amazing house and I used the details in the fabrics to guide me and filled in the other details as I could. All those art perspective lessons are still coming in handy!<br />

I don't know why, but I loved these eggs. And seriously, all of this applique was AMAZING! It all makes what little I've dabbled in applique look wonky and rough. These ladies use the most teeny tiny stitches that are absolutely perfect!<br />

I really enjoyed working on this quilt block by block and watching it come to life. It was one of those projects where at the end of each day I got to stand back and be like - did I do that??? This is really my job??? Say it isn't so!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The HSTs in the sashing perplexed me when we were planning the quilting because of all the contrast in the fabrics. I was originally thinking of coming up with two different designs, one for the light and another for the dark. But you know what, the more I stared and pondered at this quilt, simple was best again and this orange peel was the winner! It filled the area well but also was the perfect divider for each block and border. It's amazing how it looks on the back too (you'll see that in a bit).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJo4uNc-DizERfw8-miuE83zPP3ZS8nszp7ukma2VAsw__3acs9w62ziQZlasojjZ_eB3gvEPY7ARvEthTZeNxkVXvU3G5X5lH9z4rt5TuQHB4DFQZilOudBjPjKNf3OpDf0nF3Bu4T14/s1600/16.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJo4uNc-DizERfw8-miuE83zPP3ZS8nszp7ukma2VAsw__3acs9w62ziQZlasojjZ_eB3gvEPY7ARvEthTZeNxkVXvU3G5X5lH9z4rt5TuQHB4DFQZilOudBjPjKNf3OpDf0nF3Bu4T14/s400/16.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
The colors, the textures. This is one of those times that a quilt being full of amazing batiks with a few prints dabbled in here and there was the perfect mix. This quilt could not have been this vibrant without all those batiks!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAvijoiVOxy-U0d1VLPKQLpahR36mhw0yerTw73f3qooLkJzoruUF_WLtFlKgLNNmJXGB6ZoFbdXipRSK5U_z19AP7TQHzSEOkY_hUWiiIH6DI_jFyM5qGPq4EkKCBb-HuSdtk_sKX5Fo/s1600/17.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAvijoiVOxy-U0d1VLPKQLpahR36mhw0yerTw73f3qooLkJzoruUF_WLtFlKgLNNmJXGB6ZoFbdXipRSK5U_z19AP7TQHzSEOkY_hUWiiIH6DI_jFyM5qGPq4EkKCBb-HuSdtk_sKX5Fo/s400/17.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Here's some more shots of the quilt as best I could get laying this monster on the floor of the studio.<br />

And here's the back. I love a good pieced back and I love how you can see each and every block and detail from the front of the quilt.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Again, you can see the orange peel in the sashing separating all of the blocks and the border. Seriously click on each of these pictures of the back and zoom in to see all the details. It's amazing what you can see!<br />
<br />
Oh, and before you ask, this entire quilt was done with only two threads, both tans. One just a tad darker than the other.<br />
<br />
And now for the even more fun part. Remember how I said you could win this quilt? Well, this is the Flying Geese Quilt Guild's Opportunity quilt for 2017. Kinda like a raffle quilt with a different title. If you're going to be in the Irvine, CA area the beginning of June 2017, you could see this quilt in person. The quilt winner will be drawn at the quilt show on June 4th.<br />
<br />
Not going to be in Irvine? Not even in California? Maybe you're stuck in Ohio like me? No worries, you can purchase tickets! Just contact Sue at sue.glass (at) verizon (dot) net for ticket information. Trust me, this quilt is amazing and whoever gets to win this quilt will forever be stalked by me. Okay, maybe that's a bit harsh, maybe I'll just get my tickets and cross my fingers that this quilt gets to come back to Ohio and live with me forever. Just drop Sue a line and she will get you all the info you need to get your own tickets!<br />
<br />
I couldn't wait to share this quilt with all of you, but I had to be patient and persistent and catch up in my quilty photos. Don't worry, I still have plenty more quilts to share, but for now, get your tickets from Sue and drool over these photos until you get the call in June that you won the quilt. I will remind you all before the big day seeing as how it's almost Christmas and all. There's still plenty of time! Email Sue and tell her I sent you!<br />

Sometimes the best pattern you can choose is the simplest one of the bunch. There are quite a few large scale florals in this quilt and if they were chopped up any smaller, you would lose the charm of the print.<br />

Karen and I both love swirls so it's pretty common that when she and I are discussing quilts and she doesn't immediately have a quilting plan in mind, it will probably be swirls. They just work so well - I swear I can make an excuse to use swirls in every quilt if given the chance.<br />
<br />
Thanks for bringing this beautiful quilt to me, Karen!Ruby Blue Quilting Studiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00925979611375372834noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7260884226464668167.post-55033765226541320282016-12-10T07:00:00.000-05:002016-12-10T07:00:06.409-05:00Machine Quilting: Bright BubblesThere's just some quilts that arrive at my doorstep that just make you smile every time you look at them. This is one of those quilts.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This quilt is bright but soft. It's busy but simple. It's so many things and so much more. Trying to keep the quilting simple was my goal because you really weren't going to be able to see the quilting much anyway and I didn't want the quilting to compete with the fabrics.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4hmByIRIDEyS0twZJobDecu4SUnaVAZWSPhGDwH1JtO0AKu3l9H85_0JSGoBTWzGk_4OQ6Za2k_0jNMNhrXWc8SCT-2ZJzQfymKw4L69PSZ8EZ53Q55jLuQteDjq3RHu1ESP9zQF8Pc4/s1600/02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="296" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4hmByIRIDEyS0twZJobDecu4SUnaVAZWSPhGDwH1JtO0AKu3l9H85_0JSGoBTWzGk_4OQ6Za2k_0jNMNhrXWc8SCT-2ZJzQfymKw4L69PSZ8EZ53Q55jLuQteDjq3RHu1ESP9zQF8Pc4/s400/02.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
I told Ruth I thought these bubbles would be great. All this design is - it's extra jumbo sized pebbles! Ruth likes a pop of color and I'm usually a bit more subtle so we auditioned different thread colors and this is actually a light lavender that won out. We also tried blue, green and white, but that purple just had a little something to make it special. Blue was too blue (the fabrics are a bit more aqua), green was too green and white was just boring.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUHJdaUauIFng-OkPJTA82rnRbLI3Nw4L3LIwlLLPZTVyPiDUWsI45lyl7UvzUwvjd3CyJ_JSRUZTkq-Id-AAMHprLCJga_qkXqm4N5YEgKaX0iIY1Qypkc23y_3D3PPD4noxAQkdsGN4/s1600/03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="296" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUHJdaUauIFng-OkPJTA82rnRbLI3Nw4L3LIwlLLPZTVyPiDUWsI45lyl7UvzUwvjd3CyJ_JSRUZTkq-Id-AAMHprLCJga_qkXqm4N5YEgKaX0iIY1Qypkc23y_3D3PPD4noxAQkdsGN4/s400/03.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Here you can see the blocks and the fabrics a bit better. Again, this quilt is bright and bold, yet soft. It's a conundrum on the eyes but you can't stop looking at it.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpnAvmls_I8HScxep3dEHfM2wXTxbYho-gRSLDXBm5I7XTBMRZIi_pHzTSNKtm4Io7F9LanZUtQenEOFQ0M1hbgnYiWm9jO_JeOsw2b8wKaJkMjgfu0PwL84q5gjnTydAaYUpgjQwj90I/s1600/01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="296" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpnAvmls_I8HScxep3dEHfM2wXTxbYho-gRSLDXBm5I7XTBMRZIi_pHzTSNKtm4Io7F9LanZUtQenEOFQ0M1hbgnYiWm9jO_JeOsw2b8wKaJkMjgfu0PwL84q5gjnTydAaYUpgjQwj90I/s400/01.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
She wanted to make something soft and cute for baby, but not within the novelty baby genre. This scrappy quilt is the perfect gift!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEic2aX1CxgDDiX_dHopRx9nnavdEi320KsUOMk2b-F4tua6WUZ5pJenld8_Ayl0woW0tnpzsYGvb6Yb94brLFeTZEt_2tQpMPrlKfHO6sslIqtfP8gv3e2eznW4eVju2yknWDRF7LkxDt4/s1600/02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="296" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEic2aX1CxgDDiX_dHopRx9nnavdEi320KsUOMk2b-F4tua6WUZ5pJenld8_Ayl0woW0tnpzsYGvb6Yb94brLFeTZEt_2tQpMPrlKfHO6sslIqtfP8gv3e2eznW4eVju2yknWDRF7LkxDt4/s400/02.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
To keep the quilt soft yet functional, these fun swirls do the trick. Like the quilt itself, there's nothing that's too anything - it's not too girly or boyish, it's not too bright and not too theme specific. And I think it worked perfectly because I don't think I know what the baby was and I'm not positive the parents knew... I think they were waiting to be surprised.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The size of Barb's quilt was perfect for baby, but not for fabric... A normal width of fabric was just a bit too small for a backing so Barb used some of the same scraps to make this fun pieced strip to grow her backing fabric just enough so it would fit the quilt top. I love me a good pieced back that has as much personality as the front of the quilt!<br />
<br />
Thanks, Barb! I loved working on this little quilt for a new little one!Ruby Blue Quilting Studiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00925979611375372834noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7260884226464668167.post-65577930888646672272016-12-08T10:20:00.000-05:002016-12-08T10:20:44.295-05:00Machine Quilting: Simple PatchesBefore I get to the quilt, thank you all for your kind words of encouragement with Maura's teething! The poor baby has been teething for 7.5 months (no joke) so we have every type of teething apparatus and one of her favorites is just the ice cube in a mesh pacifier. All of her teeth are shifting just below the surface so you can see each and every one of them, but now that they're finally cutting through it's just that much more painful for her. I think actually her molars are shifting under the surface by the way she's been chewing on top of the teeth that are actually cutting through. I'm hoping in a way now that they've started to pop through, it'll just continue for a bit so she can get it done and over with. We shall see! Onto the quilt:<br />
<br />
Rhonda brought me this super simple top and I knew instantly how I wanted to quilt it!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhu98i9fcDqxl12q8d73d8Ma9pnrtUzOqehApI7nc6PLx5UwA3QNWSnALb-EGDMgfRvgWRUyRYfwtpKVIezM9LPiCVKgViByAJj6OB36MA9XPIknkZobofNQ0BN1gnwQJrfUGXJmdnsBqE/s1600/01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhu98i9fcDqxl12q8d73d8Ma9pnrtUzOqehApI7nc6PLx5UwA3QNWSnALb-EGDMgfRvgWRUyRYfwtpKVIezM9LPiCVKgViByAJj6OB36MA9XPIknkZobofNQ0BN1gnwQJrfUGXJmdnsBqE/s400/01.jpg" width="296" /></a></div>
A simple top calls for simple quilting. Using the pattern as a guide, I quilted orange peels and Xs in alternating blocks. That's it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvR8RReHo3p5H8KvpsVUYcBVMGXQK7yI9sdpp_n_BGuouIn4cpbjXPlRAofjY3Dw_r_A7K6MwgkU-FJ0VYPVfQiAnfwsk0Mya3vHRchjK0xxwZFa6c5enM2HnNhTxsOG5ESrldLh6NJVo/s1600/02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="296" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvR8RReHo3p5H8KvpsVUYcBVMGXQK7yI9sdpp_n_BGuouIn4cpbjXPlRAofjY3Dw_r_A7K6MwgkU-FJ0VYPVfQiAnfwsk0Mya3vHRchjK0xxwZFa6c5enM2HnNhTxsOG5ESrldLh6NJVo/s400/02.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
With a design like this I have figured out a way to quilt it in one continuous line design across the quilt doing about a row-and-a-half at a time.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_f_GXG_Iw5lBisK6ZdqBiGNcub4O1oOA4sH1id8Gnyap29AO5eobvfeImnOdFAa4KI05tLDBvgKnmACNRff-9pHY10S2nF_jXE-2dWR3UQqnDZa9QLViviX6LTH9aX-s4akCM__RPHBA/s1600/03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="296" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_f_GXG_Iw5lBisK6ZdqBiGNcub4O1oOA4sH1id8Gnyap29AO5eobvfeImnOdFAa4KI05tLDBvgKnmACNRff-9pHY10S2nF_jXE-2dWR3UQqnDZa9QLViviX6LTH9aX-s4akCM__RPHBA/s400/03.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
This was quilted in a nice neutral tan because it works so well with the mixture of fabrics and colors. It's not too dark or too light.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I know this quilt is new and the fabrics are new but I love how it looks like an antique heirloom straight off of the machine. It doesn't happen very often, but when it does, it's magical!<br />
<br />
Thank you, Rhonda! I loved working on this quilt!Ruby Blue Quilting Studiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00925979611375372834noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7260884226464668167.post-351273681524121442016-12-07T14:18:00.000-05:002016-12-07T14:18:07.246-05:00I have a confession to make...I'm really REALLY bad at blogging lately! How is it that it's Sunday night, I have all these plans for the week and posts to write and before you know it it's another Sunday night again?! Please tell me it gets better once Maura gets a bit older.<br />
<br />
Truth be told Maura has been going through teething hell for the last month or so (worse than before so actually the whole household was in teething hell too) but she now has two teeth to show for all the agony and torture!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiMHvEtmFRQ67q8OxNL562HNXeyXDWYlXZ14aTJQ7TWaQNE7UI-zrpcMUspTDWp4zSHZ74yf4PVDVt1Q0yDuGrovLLyypZXW3h6p6IPSBcbt0iVwGVUKCOp1RHXqjN51BOetw_7bHEgeM/s1600/IMG_1765.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiMHvEtmFRQ67q8OxNL562HNXeyXDWYlXZ14aTJQ7TWaQNE7UI-zrpcMUspTDWp4zSHZ74yf4PVDVt1Q0yDuGrovLLyypZXW3h6p6IPSBcbt0iVwGVUKCOp1RHXqjN51BOetw_7bHEgeM/s400/IMG_1765.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(Here's one-and-a-half teeth before they cut all the way through)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Pair that along with the busiest time of the year for long arm quilting and trying to decorate and get ready for Christmas and yeah... Somewhere in that mess I lost my mind and it doesn't look promising that it will return any time soon.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Meeting Santa for the first time - no smiles to be had!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I'm quickly typing this while Maura entertains herself in baby jail (the playpen) at the moment. She is usually such a happy cheerful baby, but those darn teeth can turn her into a little demon spawn at a moment's notice and until she either passes out or the ibuprofen kicks in, she is very very clingy. And big. We go to the doctor for her nine month check up later this week and I'm nervous - she may be within an inch of half my height at this appointment by the way she's been growing! She's been wearing 18-24 month clothes already!<br />
<br />
So anywho, that's what I've been up to and why I haven't blogged much. I have gotten a bunch more quilts finished and I need to catch up on sharing pictures of those.<br />
<br />
Last tidbit before I go - I have been quilting up a storm - so much so that I'm ahead of schedule and taking in quilts for 2017! If you'd like to discuss a quilt or get on the schedule, please email me at rubybluequilts (at) gmail (dot) com or call me at 440-567-1688! With a little miss that's deathly afraid of the sound of my domestic sewing machine, not a lot of sewing is going to happen here in the near future, nor do I have the time, energy, or fabric to create everything I want. So when someone brings me a quilt on my bucket list, I get super giddy and live vicariously through that quilt for the short time I have it in my possession. I mean, I treat all of your quilts as if they were my own, but I few I'm a little more excited to play with than others.<br />

I LOVE this wonky star quilt and it was made in just the fabrics I would probably choose to make it in too! I love the mixture of textures, the strips and plaids and prints... And Rhonda brought it right to my door to quilt.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7bjAoCxQw8qtt1FCFpEqMbLf0jrvSpNVcfyvmjDiwHeYxXOVa6K4deeQzcbsrQYeKQDkHjQhsFLMT9nN3siBjtuHZNAp-aaakFq1UcsEextA6KCMtUMHoRClXeTRJegMWcAylHRKO3FI/s1600/02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="296" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7bjAoCxQw8qtt1FCFpEqMbLf0jrvSpNVcfyvmjDiwHeYxXOVa6K4deeQzcbsrQYeKQDkHjQhsFLMT9nN3siBjtuHZNAp-aaakFq1UcsEextA6KCMtUMHoRClXeTRJegMWcAylHRKO3FI/s400/02.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
I outlined each of the stars and filled the background with these fun swirls. With all of the star points and geometrics, the background needed to be a little softer to make the stars pop even more.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTdboz6TLZRpbB7p0svxV2ddcjpIR6IE5v2omOvlNY-fMDFFs7wtahvlkWn6yYWKUT__Dz8BuI2OdqHQ4FUWBoUJ9SsBZGdn2PvMixJcxchYci0C5Q5tNqQeWoJS-l26xsIjWRNTXQZNM/s1600/03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="296" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTdboz6TLZRpbB7p0svxV2ddcjpIR6IE5v2omOvlNY-fMDFFs7wtahvlkWn6yYWKUT__Dz8BuI2OdqHQ4FUWBoUJ9SsBZGdn2PvMixJcxchYci0C5Q5tNqQeWoJS-l26xsIjWRNTXQZNM/s400/03.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Within the stars, just a simple outline did the trick. The difference between the openness of the quilting in the stars contrasting with the denser background just makes those stars pop! I would have loved to see this quilt finished and washed... I can imagine the amazing crinkliness!!!<br />

Just beautiful. But I quilted, and then it went on it's merry way and another quilt got shifted on my bucket list. I'm hoping Maura gets over her fear of my sewing machine quick because winter is about to hit here and I would love to hibernate inside and sew sew sew!<br />

And like this quilt couldn't get any better, the view of the back about took my breath away! It's so pretty! Again, I would have LOVED to see this quilt after it was washed. It could only get more amazing I'm sure!<br />

Mary did an amazing job with the embroidery and wanted some finishing touches, but didn't want to embroider everything in and make the quilt too overwhelming visually.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglbUaR3uZtMQ4ZTGEyH7UkKHrpSIoPNtlkpIRH6KKE7j1hAaqoiKydoQJGnGbpbkHIEuKRbkJE_jSzQn00ap03nYCt5c50bEZpcpBNRva8o-PTwu2wCQ6PTdaNl5pg0CHyJXNk6SbETU4/s1600/02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="296" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglbUaR3uZtMQ4ZTGEyH7UkKHrpSIoPNtlkpIRH6KKE7j1hAaqoiKydoQJGnGbpbkHIEuKRbkJE_jSzQn00ap03nYCt5c50bEZpcpBNRva8o-PTwu2wCQ6PTdaNl5pg0CHyJXNk6SbETU4/s400/02.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Trying to keep it simple yet functional, I quilted in these fun curls around the center design. It's a great design that works well in and out of little areas you may find in applique or embroidered works.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWjda31A4Se4PULVA7MgKNR9nVKKO-nJ3MhmP4dNy0mzpIrVNkvHLDk4d-XX_ZV07C907Xyc8csnmuygzljRoTcQOs02UiGZg2vQEff4C6yW1BhGxbUnGfbBbac01EBYATeTJHYAul0k4/s1600/03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="296" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWjda31A4Se4PULVA7MgKNR9nVKKO-nJ3MhmP4dNy0mzpIrVNkvHLDk4d-XX_ZV07C907Xyc8csnmuygzljRoTcQOs02UiGZg2vQEff4C6yW1BhGxbUnGfbBbac01EBYATeTJHYAul0k4/s400/03.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Mary was originally thinking about embroidering in some leaves around the text in the quilt, but we chatted about it and I could quilt the leaves for her which serves as both functionality to stitch the quilt together, but also give her the design she wanted in a more subtle appearance. The same curls from the center were then quilted in the corners and outer edges of the quilt.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Problem was, I didn't know what I wanted to quilt on it!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhotfZnSzZHk8BRNGHup3RX4qzYr7ZsH5rp279ROzrMzAnrjHQdHjsLja9PqgRlAwoDsAGeyYhTRsNDxEI-gVYIjnKBQffiOYHqeArvP71HjQEtJ-i7luDgB70ntx-EKQinsRN38Yf4m4c/s1600/01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="296" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhotfZnSzZHk8BRNGHup3RX4qzYr7ZsH5rp279ROzrMzAnrjHQdHjsLja9PqgRlAwoDsAGeyYhTRsNDxEI-gVYIjnKBQffiOYHqeArvP71HjQEtJ-i7luDgB70ntx-EKQinsRN38Yf4m4c/s400/01.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
I was trying to come up with a plan to accent the harsh angles and utilize the opposite colors in the blocks, but everything I tried just looked too too. Everything was too much or too bold or too something. So finally I took a step back and looked at it again and the answer was so simple - don't play up the angles, downplay it. Don't make opposing blocks, make them compatible with an allover design that softens the appearance of the quilt but still gives it a rustic appearance.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyLtPLqScDwvYlKYzEjGKZVB7Rwbk2bARSaMFliNSmCMk-D1Z29LRllls9LQKrcqUmoz5DT2z_nJlbqPJCUOuGhIunAzQ7GFB9geyZeHyEe9oIhQiJkVAwIvIxSXqge3pBtcay_hmczcA/s1600/02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="296" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhyLtPLqScDwvYlKYzEjGKZVB7Rwbk2bARSaMFliNSmCMk-D1Z29LRllls9LQKrcqUmoz5DT2z_nJlbqPJCUOuGhIunAzQ7GFB9geyZeHyEe9oIhQiJkVAwIvIxSXqge3pBtcay_hmczcA/s400/02.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
A nice medium brown thread and these amazing swirls were the answer and I couldn't be happier with the results.<br />
<br />
Some days my mind is my own worst enemy and I try to overthink some quilting plans when the answer was so simple all along!<br />

Really I am!<br />
<br />
Holy cow, I don't know where the last month went! It's like I blinked and wham - it's almost Thanksgiving.<br />
<br />
Things have been good here, just extremely busy (which is a good thing) and I honestly just didn't have the time or energy to post on the blog and come up with something witty when I could barely keep my eyes open myself.<br />
<br />
I'm still quilting like crazy and working on new things all the time, just not sewing... Maura is scared to death of my sewing machine. And the vacuum. Long arm machine - fine. Hair dryer - fine. Bobbin winder - fine. I sew just a few inches and she's bawling hysterically and screaming. Best Ben and I can think is there's some tone it emits that bothers her ears? Either that or she's not so subtly telling me that I need to clean my machine...<br />
<br />
I will be posting more quilt pictures as I can (cross your fingers for good naps and restful nights with a still teething baby with no teeth to show for the troubles), oh and I have some fun opportunities for you too!<br />

<br />
Hello! Welcome back for another Confessions post. Again, if you're new to my little blog, this is a weekly series where I try to share some of the behind the scenes happenings in the life of a machine quilter and attempt to clear up the confusion that exists in the quilting world. There are too many instances quilters find themselves in and even with all the books and blogs and tutorials available, a lot gets skipped over because everyone ASSUMES everyone else knows how to do everything. I'm trying to whittle my way through all of these topics and use this as an outlet to help-me-help-you. I hope that makes sense.<br />
<br />
Today I would like to discuss the ugly duckling stage. It doesn't happen to every quilt, but most quilts... And sometimes it can happen multiple times to the same quilt.<br />
<br />
They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. That statement has never been more true than in quilting. Everyone has their own style and likes and dislikes and they can change often. Quilters can experience the ugly duckling stage in different ways. Today I'm going to talk a bit about what happens on the long arm side of things.<br />
<br />
I have been quilting a ton of custom quilts lately and I love it. It keeps me on my toes and challenged creatively and I'm always coming up with new ideas. Every once in a while a quilt will stump me for a bit, but then once I figure out the way to get my plan to work it's like magic.<br />
<br />
With custom quilts I rarely give away my entire plan to my client beforehand or during because:<br />
1. I may not have the entire plan yet<br />
2. I don't like to show my secrets (sometimes I have a trick or two up my sleeve I like to hold back)<br />
3. The plan may change and alter slightly once I actually start on the quilt (the doodles and the real life quilt can look completely different sometimes)<br />
4. The Ugly Duckling Stage<br />
<br />
As of late with all of these custom quilts coming, I have had a lot more requests to see pictures of the quilt "in progress" and that always makes me nervous. I know my plan. I have the vision. That's why you send me the quilts.<br />
<br />
You don't know the plan. You don't have the vision. That's my job. And when you see the quilt "in progress" it could be in the ugly duckling stage. It's kind of like when you fix up your house and you get new furniture, but then the new furniture looks so good it makes the walls look bad and dingy and now you want to touch up the walls and paint... Same principle. With only parts of the quilt finished, it can make the unquilted areas look ick.<br />
<br />
Usually when I do send clients pictures of their quilt "in progress" it's because it's coming along even better than I anticipated and I'm so giddy I can hardly stand it so I have to share the excitement. But the quilt isn't finished yet so some areas may be bare or still in progress too. Sometimes when this happens I have a lapse in judgment and I send off a picture so giddy to get a response. And then it happens...<br />
<br />
I get the "I like _____ but I'm not loving ____" or "that part will get quilted and look better, right?" and nothing gets mentioned about the reason I sent the picture in the first place and my heart sinks. Truly it does. With a job like this you pour your heart and soul into these quilts - you have to have a passion for this because it shows - and sometimes getting that response knocks the wind out of my sails and then I get anxious and nervous that they don't like it and I start to second guess myself when I was so passionate about the plan I had a few minutes ago and excited for how it was turning out...<br />
<br />
And then I don't want to work on the quilt anymore because what if they don't like it and blah blah blah. Gosh darn that ugly duckling! Seriously, there are some quilts that behind the scenes I will consult with some of my long arming friends on ideas and plans and there will be this whole nervous breakdown over the smallest detail and my clients have absolutely no idea. It's nothing against their work or their quilts, it's all part of the artistic process.<br />
<br />
So that's when I take a break, walk away for a bit, maybe play with Maura or go grab myself an adult beverage and come back to it refreshed and relaxed. Usually that is enough to brush aside any residual anxiety and get back to work.<br />
<br />
And you know what happens? The quilt turns out amazing, sometimes even better than I could have imagined and life goes on. Sometimes even the part that people complained about initially then becomes their favorite.<br />
<br />
This is where the ugly duckling stage can happen in quilts too. Maybe sometimes it's a bundle of fabric that has that one piece in it you can't stand but if you take it away, the rest goes blah. Maybe it's that block you had trouble piecing and you're sick of looking at it. Maybe it's just that quilt that you don't like but you started it and you're bound and determined to finish it even if it'll kill you. Don't write off the whole project and toss it aside never to see the light of day again. Maybe, just take a small break, come back to it after a bit and try again.<br />
<br />
If you still don't like whatever was bugging you after that break, rip it out, start over, throw it in the trash. But give it a second chance! Try to push through and get to the finish line before you officially don't like it anymore. I LOVE when clients bring me quilts that they finished and they don't like it anymore - that's my chance to help them fall in love with it all over again and realize why they started it in the first place!<br />
<br />
Ugly ducklings don't stay ugly forever!!!<br />
<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXUTPJ5ZInSQhHZ37IsrNHEOzIH4bBGcOtfLfaVIHwIp5oh_KrPF1Ift2iTFcpXgjfC9UNfegKv6wE-ZdrccHlxCNpPxbxR6vBTHe3j4tCooKZjdedQJmFK4gwsXm1okjGsKw1j-LYuFk/s1600/01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXUTPJ5ZInSQhHZ37IsrNHEOzIH4bBGcOtfLfaVIHwIp5oh_KrPF1Ift2iTFcpXgjfC9UNfegKv6wE-ZdrccHlxCNpPxbxR6vBTHe3j4tCooKZjdedQJmFK4gwsXm1okjGsKw1j-LYuFk/s400/01.jpg" width="296" /></a></div>
It's a little hard to see here because of the angle (again still getting used to taking photos in the new quilting space - the old room was square and the new one is thin and long) but the crane panel is in the middle of a pieced kimono with some more borders added around it.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtRLl6HbstGY2XbgQShFfLeLaicYmscZIZoNQIFiv0X4a1Dd1XXbxjCR-psuiI4RY8MpPlPPkO8Yl0e03lTaOZR-QEs3SRiuQYZuE0X8-5swpyOq-hP1MDu7UJFNvACLhMtnR4Iu06ZN4/s1600/02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="296" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgtRLl6HbstGY2XbgQShFfLeLaicYmscZIZoNQIFiv0X4a1Dd1XXbxjCR-psuiI4RY8MpPlPPkO8Yl0e03lTaOZR-QEs3SRiuQYZuE0X8-5swpyOq-hP1MDu7UJFNvACLhMtnR4Iu06ZN4/s400/02.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Sharon wanted the sky to be as "lifelike" as possible with clouds. There was a little back and forth trying to figure out what kind of clouds she was looking for because my first instinct was to do stylized clouds that are common in Oriental quilts. I can only quilt with the thread like a line drawing so I had to think a bit on this one how to get the look she was going for within my abilities.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEik102F4kh_9WkenBDiYpEuTb6zRnLc3JPBodBHHvqrds-W7mmijNuZMx3DJpt75Xa4jeh0leMaORCu7KIh8-CxealDsxSgDiSzf4CxKpvgJQLX-d4YE7RGaOkp1wJKfBptVBdMqwqgcHk/s1600/03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEik102F4kh_9WkenBDiYpEuTb6zRnLc3JPBodBHHvqrds-W7mmijNuZMx3DJpt75Xa4jeh0leMaORCu7KIh8-CxealDsxSgDiSzf4CxKpvgJQLX-d4YE7RGaOkp1wJKfBptVBdMqwqgcHk/s400/03.jpg" width="296" /></a></div>
Aside from the clouds, the rest of the panel was filled with quilting to follow along the design, you actually can't see most of it and that was the plan. The other areas were filled with a variety of fillers, some based on the fabrics and some not so much.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzgpK7wnRaq_RnxfOUD9eediax8IkxnGL6RCmRLTQsAOlwKV5SZ_Qj-vdBP4SCXKkrWh5AbKFls3Qz9wrH-kyGm_EcRwhJcMepPHn7JPvELwFOkvVU5RVK2ErdeSuMsnNYDIPI9gEv8Ow/s1600/04.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="296" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzgpK7wnRaq_RnxfOUD9eediax8IkxnGL6RCmRLTQsAOlwKV5SZ_Qj-vdBP4SCXKkrWh5AbKFls3Qz9wrH-kyGm_EcRwhJcMepPHn7JPvELwFOkvVU5RVK2ErdeSuMsnNYDIPI9gEv8Ow/s400/04.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
The moon was fun to do, I added in some straight lines and bubbles to mimic craters and shadows. It's a little artsy, but it fit within the rest of the quilt.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFRjK3K7rdgtjORzk8wt9Zzqmjvl36sBdfUtVQ8Y4gFmUY9SjYAybNRvOmSlWzccpVDl9K0wr3-Cen-gobOWYLSu_jf8HUo1fifTiOX6fE9k6PZFaw66nfvjrjo8OsCvTIQwLyRPx3SN8/s1600/05.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFRjK3K7rdgtjORzk8wt9Zzqmjvl36sBdfUtVQ8Y4gFmUY9SjYAybNRvOmSlWzccpVDl9K0wr3-Cen-gobOWYLSu_jf8HUo1fifTiOX6fE9k6PZFaw66nfvjrjo8OsCvTIQwLyRPx3SN8/s400/05.jpg" width="296" /></a></div>
The other fillers were fun and defined the areas as needed, but all worked well together too. That's sometimes the hardest part of designing custom quilting - trying to make everything work on it's own yet together and not have any one part look like an afterthought.<br />

Thanks, Sharon, for sending me this quilt to work on! It's still hard to imagine that the same panel can have completely different looking results once it's all finished!Ruby Blue Quilting Studiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00925979611375372834noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7260884226464668167.post-47385602337447222822016-10-15T05:30:00.000-04:002016-10-15T05:30:30.868-04:00Machine Quilting: Paper Pieced Hunter Star PlusSharon sent me this quilt she made. It is like a Hunter Star, but there's an extra point added in... Anyway, it's beautiful!<br />

All of the background prints were these gorgeous Orientals with a slight metallic sheen. Being that the pattern is traditional with a twist and with the fabrics being, well, not traditional - I was stumped at first how to attack this one. Oriental fabrics and quilts are very theme specific but I wasn't sure Sharon wanted that since she chose a traditional style pattern. This one took a little back and forth, a few alcoholic beverages, some pondering, some late night ideas and a bunch of doodles to come up with the right compromise.<br />

This quilt was quite large and it's hard to tell in the pictures because of the scaling, but these blocks were small. There were just lots of them and since the quilting was scaled in proportion to the quilt blocks, it's very deceiving. The quilting was maybe 1/2" apart at the most in the background swirls.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I switched to a tad darker thread to quilt the stars themselves because the metallic was a little different. The lighter thread was too light. You can't really see it here, but there's a dahlia like flower in the star.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

You can see it a bit better here. I also quilted some "leaves" in the red points so even though it's not really - this was the tying factor to the Oriental fabrics with some organic style flowers and leaves between the waves and swirls.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9ODiwYWX9a5Tq77QeUhXSMhC6vyR0cQ5QcrHJMZTGIPpQ9UjflYf5TFL2wJh5aQu7gL89xpipskO5E2ql68SKwn9qd4dkhvdkBQZd6BJ9DVHrhKNEczrBWfXNvZwlE-_FXDg5-0GwfS4/s1600/05.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="296" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9ODiwYWX9a5Tq77QeUhXSMhC6vyR0cQ5QcrHJMZTGIPpQ9UjflYf5TFL2wJh5aQu7gL89xpipskO5E2ql68SKwn9qd4dkhvdkBQZd6BJ9DVHrhKNEczrBWfXNvZwlE-_FXDg5-0GwfS4/s400/05.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Here's the back of the quilt, without all of the different fabrics and colors you can see the quilting so much better.<br />
<br />
This was a fun quilt to work on and Oriental quilts are always the hardest for me to design and plan. They're so theme specific that it really limits my options and I have to do a ton of research before each and every one like this that I receive.<br />
<br />
Thank you, Sharon!Ruby Blue Quilting Studiohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00925979611375372834noreply@blogger.com1
